Dysphonia is defined by the Italian Society of Otorhinolaryngology as a qualitative and/or quantitative alteration of the spoken voice resulting from a structural and/or functional modification of one or more organs involved in its production or from an inadequacy of the dynamic relationships between the different components of the pneumophonatory apparatus.

The organs affected by dysphonia are those connected to the phonatory function, relating to the emission of the voice and sounds: vocal cords, mouth, nose, pharynx, larynx and trachea .

Dysphonias can therefore be divided into two large groups: organic dysphonias (related to a laryngeal lesion or pathology that compromises the production and control of the voice (e.g. nodules, polyps, etc.) or functional dysphonias in which no objective laryngeal alterations are found.
